Piskahegan

Piskahegan river
Class: II-IV Length: 13km
Location: Character: Creek/River run
Gauge: Waterlevel Contributor: Matthew Hall

General Description

This is one of my favorite river combos in Southwest NB. You get the excited of creeking followed by the more laid back feel of the Magaguadavic. The Piskahegan River ads three creeking style drops and some beautiful scenery to an already amazing section of river on the Mag. This run starts out with a class 3-4 rapid that runs underneath the bridge at the put in. It then has another class 2 rapid followed by a waterfall with two completely different lines. Best viewing of the falls in on river left on top of the bedrock (it also makes a great lunch area). After the falls it is only a short paddle to the confluence with the Magaguadavic River. From there you will paddle down to the Milligan Brook take out.

Hazards

While there are typically limited hazards on the Magaguadavic River, the Piskahegan River has the potential for wood. Depending on the water levels there is a retentive hole at the base of the falls and the rapid at the put in becomes extremely large with a tight line.

Gauge

If the Magaguadavic gauge is 2.5 or above the Piskahegan should be in. I determine if it’s high by how the first rapid looks. If it looks like it has enough water to make it through, then the falls downstream will be in but if the first rapid has a ton of volume then it’ll be too high.
