South Branch Rusagonis
Class: I-II | Length: 8-15km |
Location: Fredericton, NB | Character: Large stream |
Gauge: Gauge | Contributor: François Côté |
General Information
I will describe the river from two possible put-ins I have used. The higher one is on O’Leary rd where a small bridge spans the stream. If starting here you can enjoy a few km of swifts and class I with good current before the stream gets deeper and slower before crossing under the NB 101. The current will begin to pick up again and after a few more km the stream will pass under a bridge on Moore rd which is an alternate and convenient put-in for a shorter (8km) run. There is good current for the remainder of the run from here with swifts and class I until the ledges near the end. About 1km from the take-out, there is a series of 3 ledges/rock ramps which are the most significant feature on this stream (though still probably only class II). They tend to be very shallow unless the water level is quite high. Shortly after these, the North Branch of the Rusagonis will join on river left just before the covered bridge which is the take-out.
Named Rapids
There are no named rapids on this run.
Hazards
Watch out for sweepers and strainers. The ledges near the end can sometimes retain some logs.
