General Description
New River is Charlotte County’s best creek run. All the rapids are pool drops making them great for intermediate paddlers to step up their game and get confident in class 3 rapids. There are two to three class 4/5 rapids on this river. The first two have portages cleared out on river left. The last difficult class 4/5 rapid is the tidal rapid which is consistently changing based on the tide. It is easiest to scout on river right above the drop.
Hazards
This river changes it difficulty significantly based on the water level. If the Lepreau Gauge reads 1.2 or above, it should only be attempted with an experienced group. Some rapids have pinning hazards due to the shape of the bedrock, and there are some undercuts in rapids. Elbow pads and full-face helmet are strongly recommended.
