General Description
The Black River is one of the popular SJ runs. It is a steep creek that acts like a drainage ditch. The river rises and drops quickly and does not hold water long. There are lots of continuous class 2-3 sections and class 3-4 drops. This river is known to double its volume after the confluence of the West and East Branch Black River's making the lower section extremely dangerous. Because of all this you need to use caution when you paddle this section and pay close attention to where the rain falls on the watershed to avoid dangerously high water and lengthy portages.
